Our Services

At NeuPath Speech Rehabilitation we provide rehabilitation, supports and education for people with an acquired communication difficulty. An acquired communication difficulty may arise as a result of stroke or other types of acquired brain injury (e.g. hypoxic brain injury, traumatic brain injury, seizures, oncological neurological conditions). We also work closely with communication partners such as family members, friends, support workers and employers/ colleagues.

Communication difficulties that we work with include:

  • aphasia

  • apraxia (verbal dyspraxia)

  • cognitive-communication impairment (including social/pragmatic disorder)

  • dysarthria

Additional services offered:

  • communication-partner training (with the client and their families, friends, support network)

  • return to work

  • group therapy

We work with people from soon after hospital discharge, through to many years post stroke or brain injury.

  • Duration: around two (2) hours

Assessment inclusions and duration is customised for each client.

    Get to know you

We will seek to learn more about you as a person, including your life roles and responsibilities. We will ask about the impact of your communication difficulties.

    Sit down assessment

We will explore one or more specific elements of your communication (e.g. talking, understanding, reading, writing, using numbers). This may be similiar to what you did with the Speech Pathologist in hospital.

    Functional assessment

We will take a closer look at your communication skills in real-life situations that are important to you (e.g. at work, at the cafe, engaging with your kids, at dog training).

  • Duration: around one (1) hour

Goals are your aspirations; something that you want to achieve. They are different for every person. For example, one person's goal may be to read a bed time story to their child. Another person's goal may be to apply for a job.

    Together, we will:

    • identify your goals.

    • decide what is realistic and achievable.

    • record your goals so that you can review them regularly (e.g. write them down or create an audio file)

    • agree upon a therapy timeframe.

    • discuss when and how we will measure if therapy is working.

  • Duration: around forty-five (45) minutes

    Location:

Some sessions may occur in a private, quiet space of your choosing (e.g. at home, in a booked space at the library). Other sessions may occur "out and about", working on real life communication skills that are meaningful to you (E.g. buying a movie ticket, or asking for help to find a plant at your local nursery).

    Transport

We will always meet at an agreed location. Clients are responsible for their own transport.

    Home Practice

Home practice is important for therapy success. If you need help to practice, we will discuss this with you before commencing therapy. Setting up home practice supports in advance will pay off later!

  • Small-group therapy (3-4 people) offers several benefits.

For some types of communication disorders, there is a strong evidence base to suggest that group therapy is an effective and important component of care.

Group therapy may be a more affordable way for you to access speech pathology rehabilitation.

If you are interested in participating in group therapy, please contact us for more information.

  • For client and main communication partners

Typically delivered over six (6) to eight (8) sessions. You attend all sessions with the same communication partner/s. Communication partners may include friend/s, family member/s (including children), or carer/s. Together, we will select several key goals to work on; these goals will be aimed at improving the overall success of conversation between you and your communication partner/s.

Research evidence tells us that communication partner training requires a hands on approach and is much more than just providing a list of strategies. Rukmani has undertaken specific training through the University College of London to deliver Better Conversations, a therapy approach that aims to help individuals with communication difficulties to have more enjoyable and successful interactions in their everyday lives. For workplaces

We offer face to face or online communication partner training for your workplace. This includes education about your specific communication disorder (e.g. aphasia) and communication strategies that your employer and or colleagues can use. The training that we provide can be as specific or general as you like. Your privacy and confidentiality is respected. We ensure that you are happy with all components of the education before it is delivered.

Reclaim your independence.
